Personal Reflection

Millimeters from darkness: what two 3-inch scars taught me about resilience.

Applied Philosophy & ResilienceChange Management & Leadership

Most people see the scar above my right eye and see an imperfection. I see a receipt for a life saved.

The Midnight Crisis

Driving from the Netherlands to Portugal, just 30km from the border, my EV ran out of charge. In the pitch black, while troubleshooting a charger, I tripped over a concrete barrier and hit the machine head-first.

The impact was devastating: a 3-inch gash starting inside my right eye socket and another 3-inch wound in my hairline. I was knocked unconscious and bleeding out. I truly thought my journey had reached its final stop.

The Human Element

I am only here because of a stranger, a recovery driver who used his own jacket to plug the wounds and called for help until an ambulance reached us. He saved my life.

From Hiding to Leading

I spent days in a hotel room, too self-conscious to show my face. But as the stitches came out, my perspective shifted. I realized my scars are not damage, they are a successful software update.

The Lesson

Gratitude for the near miss. I could have lost my sight. Instead, I just lost my perfect skin.

Visible vs. hidden battles. We all carry scars. Both are proof of our capacity to heal.

The power of so what. I survived a life-and-death trauma. If someone is distracted by a scar, that is their issue, not mine.

I am scarred, I am unburdened, and I am more full of life than ever. It is not the end; it is a new beginning.
