The Observation

Most corporate AI adoption right now is a waste of capital. Markets punish companies for staying silent on tech, so executives rush to announce an AI strategy just to look trendy. They completely miss the operational reality. Real value requires a complete restructuring of how you operate. You cannot just plug this technology in and expect it to work.

The Analysis

Slapping generic tools onto basic tasks looks great in board meetings, but it traps companies in pilot programs that stall before reaching real-world application. Deep integration looks entirely different.

True adoption demands an initial tax. Banks that adopt this technology experience a significant short-term decline in their return on equity as they absorb massive integration and infrastructure costs just to make the systems function. Furthermore, entry-level knowledge roles have to change fundamentally, and that is the hard work most companies actively avoid.

The golden rule of digital transformation: digitizing a flawed process simply scales the flaw. Software cannot fix broken operational governance or behavioral misalignment.

The Tactical Step

Mitigate AI washing liabilities. The SEC is already cracking down on unrealistic AI claims. Directors and officers face real financial and legal exposure if they overhype capabilities without evidence.

Balance accuracy with simplicity. Look closely at the trade-offs between model accuracy and system simplicity. Complex models often become maintenance nightmares that require substantial, underestimated investments in data cleanup and harmonization.

Enforce strategic consolidation. Prioritize clear governance and disciplined decision-making over unchecked tool proliferation. Choose systemic stability over short-term optimization.
